Final Reflection
My thoughts on Comm 332 Nonverbal communication
Studying nonverbal communication has been both a challenge and beneficial. I am now much more aware how much how my nonverbal communication is sending messages. Prior to this class I really was not very aware of what signals I was sending, nor was I aware of nonverbal signals others were sending. It is almost like being deaf to it.
Another area that has been impactful is leveraging non-verbal codes such as Kinesics, Vocalics, and Proxemics as a children’s content creator. In the non-verbal analysis paper (rewrite) analyzing nonverbal codes in Pokémon I learned much about the use of these codes to communicate deeper meaning and context to the story and the relationships of the characters. This is important for me as an aspiring children’s content creator. Nonverbal communication, especially Kinesics, vocalics and physical appearance.
I really enjoyed the workshops. I liked exchanging thoughts, ideas, and observations with my fellow classmates and Professor Tucker. It was a level of involvement and engagement that I have not had in many classes during my George Mason academic career. My peers were willing to share and to hear what I had to say which was encouraging.
My final thought on Comm 332 and nonverbal communication is that it is far more important than I ever realized. I was encouraged to take this class because I had a need to learn these skills both for my own ability to communicate and understand others, but also what needs to be considered as I imagine new content targeted toward a preschool-aged audience. I would recommend this class for just about anyone, Comm major or not.
-Cheers!
